This year there will be no 4-day Sŵn Festival. The reasons for this are outlined below. Instead we’re delighted to announce that we’re creating a one day multi-venue event across seven Cardiff venues on Saturday 18th October which we’re calling DimSŵn. The first 40 bands are announced today, with a few more to come in the next fortnight.

Much like Sŵn, you can buy a ticket to DimSŵn to exchange on the day for a wristband, which will then grant you entry (subject to capacity) to all of the shows happening at the event. Live music will start just after you’ve had your lunch and run until around midnight, and there’ll be a host of clubnights where you can then carry on dancing until you finally choose to sleep.

Tickets for DimSŵn are onsale now on this website, and will shortly be available in person at Spillers Records. As it’s a much smaller event than our usual Sŵn Festival offering then please be aware that tickets are capped at just 500 sales. For the line-up, ticket links and other information please click through here.

We’re also super pleased that DimSŵn will also be open to those aged 14 and over. A special wristband is available to buy from today for anyone 14+. Please be aware that each of the venues operates different restrictions and timings on those who are ‘underage’ which we’ve outlined on the venues page, so please plan your day accordingly.

Why DimSŵn but no Sŵn Festival?

Last year was an incredible year for Sŵn Festival, our seventh edition and our biggest and best yet, capped by winning the NME Best Small Festival Award. It marked a moment for us, as Sŵn Festival had now grown to a size and a significance that was bigger than our small group that put it together.

Where we once had been able to deliver the event with a tight-knit bunch of freelancers, part-timers and volunteers, we looked ahead to 2014 and knew we’d need a much bigger team, but that was something we just couldn’t make happen for an event of this size. In addition the Festival co-founder, John, who had once been able to put a lot of time in for free, now had full time work. We were too big to be small, but too small to be big. We thought that might be the end of Sŵn Festival, and it was heart breaking.

John received contact from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. He’d been nominated for Breakthrough Grant, which he was successful in securing (there’s more info on this here). One aspect of the Grant would be support to enable John to leave his job in August and work full time on Sŵn. This was a unique lifeline for the festival.

At that point in time a one-day event, DimSŵn, made sense, and with support from our partners, the bands and their agents we’re so pleased to be able to make this announcement. Plus, now with Paul Hamlyn Foundation support, we are looking ahead to re-imagining Sŵn Festival in 2015.

We hope that any disappointment is offset by the great day that DimSŵn will be, and that there’ll be much more good stuff to come.

Eleni bydd dim gwyl Sŵn 4 diwrnod. Mae’r rhesymau am hyn isod. Yn lle, ni’n falch gallu cyhoeddi fod Gwyl Un Dydd mewn sawl lleoliad yng Nghaerdydd yn digwydd ar Sadwrn Hydref 18, o’r enw DimSŵn. Mae’r 40 band cynta yn cael eu cyhoeddi yma, gyda mwy ar y ffordd yn fuan.

Yn debyg i Sŵn, gallwch brynu tocyn i newid am band garddwn, bydd wedyn yn eich galluogi i fynd i bob gig fel rhan o’r digwyddiad (os oes lle tu fewn yn ol y gyfraith). Bydd y gerddoriaeth yn dechrau amser cinio, a gorffen tua hanner nos, gyda rhai digwyddiadau yn agor yn hwyrach.

Mae tocynnau ar werth yma, ac yn fuan o Spillers yng Nghaerdydd. Dim ond 500 tocyn bydd ar gael, gan fod y digwyddiad yn llawer llai na’r Sŵn arferol. Ni’n hapus gweud fod Sŵn ar agor i bawb ros 14 mlwydd oed eleni, gyda band garddwn arbennig ar gael. Mae bob lleoliad yn trin ‘o dan oed’ yn wahanol, a mae manylion ar y dudalen ‘Venues/Lleoliadau’, felly gnewch yn siwr eich bod yn edrych yn ofalus cyn prynu.

Pam DimSŵn ond dim Sŵn?

Roedd llynedd yn flwyddyn anhygoel i Sŵn, ein seithfed mlynedd a’r mwyaf eto. Fe ennillon ni Wobr Gwyl Bach y Flwyddyn yng ngwobrau yr NME, ac roedddem yn falch fod yr wyl wed tyfu mewn i rywbeth roedd pawb gallu bod yn falch ohonno.

Lle roeddem unwaith gallu cynnal gwyl gyda criw o weithwyr llaw-rydd, rhan amser a gwirfoddolwyr, roedden ni’n edrych ar 2014 a sylwi ein bod angen llawer mwy o bobl i weithio ar Sŵn, a doeddem methu genud hynny i ddigwyddiad o’r maint hwn. Hefyd roedd John Rostron mewn swydd llawn amser. Roeddem yn rhy fawr i fod yn wyl bach, ac yn rhy fach i fod yn wyl mawr. Roedd yn edrych fel bod Sŵn mynd i ddod i ben.

Derbyniodd John grant gan y Paul Hamlyn Foundation, oedd yn golygu fod John medru gadael eu swydd ym mis Awst, a gweithio llawn amser ar Sŵn, oedd yn golygu fod yr wyl yn gallu parhau.

Dyma pryd sylweddolom ni fod DimSŵn yn gwneud synnwyr, a gyda chefnogaeth gan ein partneriaid, y bandiau a’i asiantaethau ni’n falch o allu cyhoeddi hyn heddiw. A gyda chefnogaeth Paul hamlyn Foundation, ni’n edrych mlaen i weithio ar Sŵn 2015.

Ni’n gobeithio bydd y siom fod dim Gwyl Sŵn fel a fu yn digwydd eleni, yn cael eu goncro gan yr hapusrwydd bydd DimSŵn yn dod ar Hydref 18 eleni. Diolch i chi am eich cefnogaeth.
