Growing up in rural Somerset it was less shows and more the collection of cd’s and records from my parents, grandparents and charity shops that shaped my taste and gave me that hunger to find new music. From The Cure to The Prodigy and with a few classic disco and soul records in between, besides local live sound and production gigs here and there, my first steps in music came when I moved to Cardiff for university and started a blog.
With a long time love of American DIY music, I made it my aim to champion artists from the states and overseas, and so I dipped my toes into an array of areas alongside blogging, such as touring, sync and helping out with the running of a zine (long live secret meeting), before heading into the world of PR. Where I set out with the aim of sharing the music I loved that was often overlooked and underappreciated and helping these artists from the US find routes into UK publications… all from the bedroom of a student house in Wales.
Gaining support for my artists from the likes of The Guardian, Crack, The Independent and many more, I took a detour from press to set up a label and management company. Soon one thing led to another and I had a beautiful roster of artists from across the states, europe and the UK. Signing record and publishing deals across the uk and the states, having my artists tour europe, the uk and the states with the likes of Beach House and Big Thief, playing festivals such as Glastonbury, Green Man, Pitchfork and many more, my artist development focused on long term sustainable approaches with community based engagement and ‘peculiar’ marketing strategies that felt fun to both the artists and teams involved. All of which was done solo and as an independent manager.
And now from the top of this year I find myself still managing a few select projects, but now also in my new role, as the A&R across records and publishing for Domino. A label and publisher that has played a crucial part in shaping musical culture and one that has worked with an array of my favourite current and legacy artists from cult diy to household names, and so it was a privilege to join the team here.
